Earthwood’s Mark Biggelaar says “handling much loved wooden furniture items is a privilege and it gives me great pleasure to see the looks on client faces when they see how I’ve restored their damaged items. I’m lucky to love what I do.”
Mark works with all types of timber surfaces. He is often asked to restore dining table tops. “Traditionally they get heat damaged; the dreaded white ring from sloppy mugs or wine glasses. The usual remedy is a tablecloth but that takes all the pleasure out of having a beautiful wooden surface,” says Mark.
A variety of products can be used to restore table-tops and do away forever with tablecloths on washing day. “Modern expertly applied surface coatings allow people to use their dining tables as they were meant to be used. No more white rings – just wipe with a damp cloth. If the table is cared for in this way once it has been properly resurfaced, whether veneered, solid wood, or pigmented paint, many years of life can be expected.”
For a virtually indestructible surface, Mark recommends the more expensive liquid glass surface which provides a glossy, super hard layer of between 1-2 millimeters. The non-toxic pure epoxy is favoured in the food industry for it’s durability and food-safe properties.
Earthwood Ltd recently developed a beeswax product specifically for antiques and low-use items such as grandmas’ old sideboard. Ideal for occasional furniture and worn timber, it provides shine without a lacquered look. Customer comments on the pleasant smell, old age feel, and quality look led Mark to offer the product on TradeMe. Search for beeswax and furniture.
Mark provides other surface-coating expertise, including French polishing, colour layering for special effects, veneer restoration, marine interiors, and modern surfaces.
Offering a pick-up and delivery service, Mark always provides the job on time. “Earthwood stands for excellent work backed up by excellent personal service.”
